Ferries take passengers to Scolt Head Island from Burnham Overy Staithe in season and according to the tides. A fantastic place for family picnics or just beachcombing and bird watching on golden sands.

Crabbing as the tide is falling can be great fun for children on the Burnham Overy quay. Crab lines on sale from the boathouse – remember to take some bait – bacon is the usual choice.

Shopping

Shopping in Burnham market, Holt or the small back streets of Wells offers diversity from local produce, delicatessens, fish shops, butchers’ to something special for the home or designer fashion.

Follow shopping with lunch at the Hoste Arms on the green at Burnham Market.

Beaches

The beaches in North Norfolk are very beautiful, many are sandy with gentle gradients and sandunes.

Beach Huts at Wells Next the Sea – Accessible from Lady Ann’s rive or the wells beach car park – turn left on the quay and follow the beach road to the pinewoods Caravan Park and car park. It is then a short walk through the pinewoods to the beach. There is also an accessible boardwalk for people using wheelchairs.

Spectacular Holkham beach can be reached either from Wells or at the other end from Burnham Overy Staithe where there is a footpath. The walk takes a good half hour but bikes are allowed. Alternatively the beach can be reached in the middle from Lady Ann’s Drive opposite to the Victoria Hotel and restaurant owned by the Holkham estate. Charges are made for parking at Lady Ann’s Drive and Wells. Parking is free at Burnham Overy but beware of high tides if parked on the hard.

The beaches are great places to walk on a bright winter’s day. The pinewoods provide shelter from the wind. Just the place to walk off a large lunch from the Victoria, or fish and chips from Plattens on the Wells quay.

Norfolk BeachBrancaster beach is often visited by young families as the tide does not retreat quite as far as it does at Holkham. Parking is adjacent to the beach. Follow your visit to Brancaster with a visit to the White Horse and watch the sun go down across the marshes. (Child friendly it is advisable to book at weekends and in season). Brancaster is noted for its coastal flora and the roman site of Branodum.

Moving along the coast towards Holt and Sheringham there is the picturesque village of Blakeney. From here you can take a boat trip to see the seals at Blakeney point from the harbour quay. An excellent bacon sandwich and cup of tea can be bought from the caravan on the quay.

Because of their very gentle gradients the beaches in North Norfolk have rapidly rising tides, and sometimes strong currents. Isolated sandbanks can quickly be cut off by incoming tides. Please be aware of this and watch small children at all times.

Coastal Bird Watching

Morston Marshes and Stiffkey are excellent for viewing an array of sea birds. Stop for a light lunch at Crabbies for locally caught fish crab and mussels
